Writing A Literature Review
You must be able to adequately answer the following questions and be able to clearly state how your research came about. You must be able to demonstrate that your PhD research has https://forexarena.net/ depth and it is a sound piece of scholarly research. If you cannot identify scholarly aspects in your research project, then expand your literature review and give it more depth.
It is widely agreed that supply chains encompass and integrate material, information, and financial flows across organizations. There is a robust history and continually expanding research agenda investigating supply chain management practice and theory associated with material and information flows and processes. However, the management of financial flows from a supply chain perspective and in combination with the other flows, usually referred to as supply chain finance , has been under-investigated. Our understanding of SCF approaches and solutions in purchasing and supply management is only starting to form. Organizational systems such as the literature grid are essential for keeping track of your readings. Use the grid strategy, or a similar system, to record key information and main findings/arguments for each source.
Well, one option is to see the literature review as outlining your ‘contribution to knowledge’, which doesn’t necessarily require the framework of opposition forex implied in ‘gap’ finding. But I personally feel the phrase ‘contribution to knowledge’ sounds overly bombastic; I find it hard to take myself that seriously.
Depending on the length of your literature review, you might want to divide the body into subsections. You can use a subheading for each theme, time period, or methodological approach. Like any other academic text, your literature review should have an introduction, a main body, and a conclusion. You can use it to discuss various theories, models, and definitions of key concepts. Depending on the length of your literature review, you can combine several of these strategies .
Still Have Questions?
If someone else has done the work of characterizing the literature for you (for example, the language learning motivation literature has been pretty thoroughly summarized byDörnyei), then you don’t need to invent a new framing. Rather, you can note where the literature you review fits into the pre-existing framing and note how your research contributes further to understanding somehow. If you can critique some aspects of the framing, that’s even better in my opinion. Please don’t feel that the list above is comprehensive by any means; these are my own ideas about this topic, and if they help you to think about how to frame your own writing, then I’ll feel like I’ve done my job. Giving a comprehensive account of how students/authors can seek to contribute to knowledge or fill a gap in the literature would be well beyond the scope of a single blog post.
Thus, you should be able to demonstrate that the research topic you chose has not been studied before, or that you are taking a new perspective on a previously studied topic. The dissertation should highlight what makes your work an original contribution.
Instead, they summarize and critically assess a body of scholarly literature from a relatively objective perspective. Writing a literature review is a rigorous process, requiring a thorough evaluation of the quality and findings of each source discussed. Writing the literature review shows your reader how your work relates to existing research and what new insights it will contribute. The introduction should clearly establish the focus and purpose of the literature review. For example, if you are reviewing literature about inequalities in migrant health outcomes, key themes might include healthcare policy, language barriers, cultural attitudes, legal status, and economic access.
However, in an era of rapidly changing digital technologies, the mass media paradigm is no longer adequate for understanding how people engage with images, and the findings of older studies like this one may not be generalizable to younger generations. In light of this changing landscape, researchers have become increasingly interested in the specific effects of social media. Perloff theorizes that the interactive aspects of social media may influence its impact on body image, and mentions that young women are among the most active social media users. Across these studies, there is consistent evidence that body image issues are influenced not by social media usage in general, but by engagement with the visual and interactive aspects of these platforms. Nonetheless, there is a lack of robust research on more highly visual social media such as Instagram and Snapchat that have gained more recent popularity among younger generations.
This paper aims to redefine the term SCF by shedding light on theoretical ambiguities, provide an up-to-date systematic literature review of the SCF concept and identify research gaps. The goal is to also highlight emerging areas like the “Supply Chain Financial Bullwhip Effect” and Blockchain Technology. Unlike some of the other well-known “reviews” (e.g. theater or book reviews), literature reviews steer clear of opinion statements.
I am, after all, the same person who put a plastic plate in the toaster oven when I was twelve years old. I don’t want the world’s knowledge to be riding on the adult that kid became. As you read and write initial drafts, you will find new threads and complementary themes, at which point you will return to search, find out about these new themes, and incorporate them into your review. Supply Chain Finance is a relatively recent thinking in Supply Chain Management literature. Major Interest in SCF has steadily increased since the past decades and especially during the global financial crisis of 2008. However, SCF places the focus of research on the interconnection among SCM, corporate value and financial performance, away from the myopic perspective of managing solely the cost when studying financial aspects of SCM.
Identifying Gaps In The Literature Or Contributions That You Hope To Make
I start with some more abstract critique of the concept of a ‘gap’ in the literature then follow with what I refer to as different ‘levels’ of gap/contribution identification. Finally, I finish with some more general advice for thinking about and writing literature reviews. You can watch recorded webinars on the literature review in our Library Webinar Archives. The purpose of this guide is to help you through the literature review process. Take some time to look over the resources in order to become familiar with them. It’s easy to lose sight of this when you’re doing your research, following various threads of interest, sometimes getting bogged down in the details. The literature review is not a comprehensive history of your topic, but a way to provide context to your reader about research that has preceded your study.
Include a list of the contributions that your research makes to the literature in your particular subject area and indicate why they are important. You should also indicate the practical or policy implications of your research by stating how it can fill the gaps in existing research or showing how it can widen the understanding of particular topics/issues. This is not an easy level of contribution to engage at, but it is one that I feel demonstrates critical engagement with the literature and a clear vision for how a given piece of writing fits into the larger literature in which it is couched. In task-based language learning guides, providing language for learners before they are asked to complete a task is generally discouraged, as it may influence students’ task performance . However, the influence of providing pre-task language for students has not been investigated to date, and so the current investigation seeks to examine how pre-task language influences task performance in the English language classroom. Well, one issue is that, particularly in language research, context tends to be defined quite uncritically as bounded by country or nationality (‘Japanese’, ‘Chinese’, ‘Mexican’ learners) and/or by demographic category .
- Hopefully in this section I’ve at least outlined the tensions inherent in seeking to find a gap in the literature or outline the contribution to knowledge that you are seeking to make through your writing.
- I recently received a literature review chapter from a student, and in my feedback noted more needed to be done to helped identify the ‘gap’ in the literature that her work is seeking to fill.
- Pointing out multiple gaps/contributions can help to better situate your investigation in the literature you review and demonstrate greater critical thinking regarding the topic of your investigation and your framing of your investigation.
- There’s a kind of fine balancing act required between pointing out what previous research has accomplished, while at the same time leaving space in a review of the literature for your specific writing/investigation to make its own contribution.
- In the next part of this post I’ll consider some different strategies for identifying specific gaps or contributions.
- I’ll try to outline them from less to more critical, so you can hopefully see a scale of thinking about the topic emerge.
I made a name for myself investigating an aspect of task-based language teaching using this argument. In my reading of the literature on task-based language teaching, there was often a statement to the effect that teachers shouldn’t pre-teach language phrases, as that could somehow contaminate students’ language when it came time for them to complete a language task. To my knowledge, the jury is still out, by the way, just in case you’re looking for a topic to investigate yourself.

If you have found some recurring central themes, you can organize your literature review into subsections that address different aspects of the topic. This step will help you work out the structure of your literature review and show how your own research will contribute to existing knowledge. You can use our free citation generator to quickly create correct and consistentAPA citations or MLA citations. Take notes that you can later incorporate into the text of your literature review. There’s still a bit of pie ZuluTrade Forex Broker Review slicing of knowledge going on, but this is more directly related to ongoing conversations in the literature than those in the previous section. Also, the specific demographics of the learners/participants aren’t necessarily important to the investigation; the issues being explored are what’s important in this instance. Another example of this comes from my PhD research; one author, Gosden , makes a claim that certain sections of papers are revised more than others during the process of review and revision.
Sometimes using framings such as these is useful and necessary, but I think it’s almost always in the best interests of the authors using them to include some acknowledgment of their shortcomings and to justify their reasoning for using them. For example, if someone is interested in issues of teaching English to Japanese high school students, then investigating Japanese high school students makes sense, but such a framing would be more practice-oriented, which I discuss further below. While the attitudes of Japanese learners of English toward differently accented English has been investigated at the junior and senior high school levels and in universities, primary school pupils’ attitudes have not been described in the literature. To address this gap in understanding of Japanese primary school students’ attitudes toward differently accented English, this investigation was conducted using 100 pupils from 4 primary schools located in the Tokyo area. If the requirement is that you find a ‘gap’ in understanding, then by definition as an author you are required to explain what those who came before you got wrong or didn’t understand. This study develops a supply chain finance adoption model to investigate the key drivers and corresponding outcomes of supply chain finance adoption decisions.
The Role Of Ergonomics In Suporting Supply Chain Performance In Manufacturing Companies: A Literature Review
Your literature review gives readers an understanding of the scholarly research on your topic. It shows that uncertainties faced by SCF providers delineate the information processing requirements. The fit between SCF providers’ information processing requirements and capacity could further improve SCF capability, which would help to achieve integration of the whole financial SC. The literature review usually comes near the beginning of your thesis or dissertation. After the introduction, it grounds your research in a scholarly field and leads directly to your theoretical framework or methodology. Body image issues have been widely associated with social media usage, particularly in young women. The relation between media depictions and body image concerns is well-established; a meta-analysis by Grabe, Ward and Hyde concluded that exposure to mass media is linked to body image dissatisfaction among women.
You can find out how many times an article has been cited on Google Scholar – a high citation count means the article has been influential in the field, and should certainly be included in your literature review. You probably won’t be able to read absolutely everything that has been written on the topic – you’ll have to evaluate which sources are most relevant to your questions. In order to demonstrate that your thesis is an original study and that it will provide a significant contribution the academe, your dissertation should be very specific and focused.
However, he makes that claim as a justification for only looking at those sections in his own research and the claim doesn’t include a citation. So, if one investigates entire manuscripts for the changes made to them, one could evaluate Gosden’s claim. That’s one of the claims to a contribution to knowledge that I make in my PhD thesis.
How To Write A Literature Review
We examine the impacts of perceived capital pressure, order fulfillment cycle, and inventory turnover cycle on three types of supply chain finance adoption . In addition, we examine the impacts of three types supply chain finance adoption on the performance of supply chain cost reduction. We use data collected from 683 companies of eight industries in China to test our proposed relationships. The results show that perceived capital pressure and order fulfillment cycle are significant predictors of supply chain finance adoption decisions. Accounts receivable finance and inventory finance significantly influence supply chain cost reduction. This study is one of the first attempts to conduct large sample empirical investigation in supply chain finance research. Our findings enhance the understanding of supply chain finance adoption for both academics and practitioners.
